Sex both the buyers and sells of the pornography

Sex in most cases is a taboo subject, not
to mention the movies about sex-pornography. However, according to the
investigation from Gobry and Saint in 2011, “In USA, around 70% of men aged
18–24 visit porn sites in a typical month.” Pornography has already been
normalized in many society and culture. Facing this situation, some people
believe that pornography should be banned for its adverse effect on society and
human behavior. However, I argue that to see the pornography is the basic human
right to reflect human autonomy since it is a personal behavior out of the
consenting adult and doesn’t affect anyone else.

Andrew Altman in his paper “The right to
Get Turned On: Pornography Autonomy, Equality” shares the same opinion as mine.
His basic conviction is that “the right of pornography should be understood
primarily as an element of another form of freedom: sexual autonomy” (307). He
furthers his argument firstly by presenting the definition on pornography, “Pornography
is sexually explicit material, in words or images, which is intended by its
creators to excite sexually those who are willing viewers of the material.”
(308)  Here, Altman stresses that
pornography is just a commodity and this is the starting point for his
reasoning. Then, Altman argues just as any ordinary commodities, “there is
nothing inherent to the activities of producing or consuming pornography which
raises the presumption that there are some direct unwilling victims of the
activities.” (310). Altman believe both the buyers and sells of the pornography
are consenting and willing adults, who have rights to “a substantial degree of
control over their own lives.” (309). Among these lives is sexual life. He
believe that “liberal rules left adults morally free to engage in the sexual
activities of their choice, as long as the activities had no direct unwilling
victims”(309) and “right of sexual autonomy is possessed equally by each
adult.”

However, some people might blame Altman
for his hasty conclusion because they believe the pornography has adversely
affected some people’s lives, especially the lives of women who are more
exposed to the sexual violence because of the influence of the violence
pornography on the morally defected men. Some people argue that “some of them
may be prompted to commit sexual violence as a result of their exposure to
violent pornography.” (311) If the violent pornography really led to increases
in sexual violence, then the victims pay for the price of all the adults
accessible to the pornographies. This situation, if happens, is at odds with
liberal’s supposition, as under liberal’s condition that the pornography can only
be justified “as long as the activities had no direct unwilling victims” (309)

However, by now, there is no empirical
evidence could verify the relationship between the violent pornography and
sexual violence. First of all, “the extrapolation from the experimental studies
to conclusions about sexual crimes is rather tenuous”(312), as no one knows how
long and whether the pornography really changes the view’s behavior and lead to
the sex crimes. Secondly, the results from statistical studies are also ambiguous.
Although the sex crimes increases since the 1960s as the violent pornography
has become more accessible, but the non-sex crimes increases in the same time;
therefore, we have the very reason to believe some other variables such as
poverty contribute to the sync increase. As a result, “the existing state of
the evidence, then is quite far from clearly establishing any casual connection
between violent pornography and sexual violence.” (312)

The perspective that pornography produces
significant detrimental effect on human behavior, psychological development as
well as gender inequality is also highly quoted in order to ban the pornography.
In the pornography, women are always seen in the “sexual servility or
subordinate” (314) Long term exposed to these movies, man will probably lose
respect to the women in reality, and in some cases, women will also
automatically put themselves in the servility and subordinate position.
Therefore, pornography worsens the gender inequality, renders men more arrogant
and make women belittle themselves.
