People with disabilities in the world face many different challenges. People with disabilities might not be able to see, hear, walk, or have trouble remembering and many other things. It is estimated that 15% of the world population faces a form of disability. That is over a billion people worldwide. Studies say that people with disability has less chances of being able to get health care services and are not able to take care of their disability needs. (“Disability and Health”)
All members of society have the same human rights. The rights of the people with disabilities also are the rights of human rights. The United Nations adopted the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on the 13th of December 2006 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. It is an international treaty that was created to help government around the world help make sure children and adults with disabilities have rights. (“It’s about Ability”)
It is estimated that the general population of Colombia will be about 50 million people. Three million or more Colombians are estimated as disabled persons. (DANE) President Juan Miguel Santos ordered the National Department of Statistics (DANE) to include disabled people in the national counting or census of all the population. The census work began in January 9th, 2018 and will continue until June. (“Population with Disabilities to Be Included in Colombian Census”) The Colombian Constitution of 1991 protects the right to equality and prohibit discrimination. in 2013, the Congress of the Republic made the Law 1618, this helps with the CRPD and the human rights of all people. Colombia is working to make sure all people with disabilities are located and counted. There is still a lot of work that needs to be done to help everyone that has a disability. One of the problems affecting and causing disability problems in Colombia is the land mines. Colombia has had armed violence because of a 50 year disagreement between the government and FARC. Thirty one of the thirty two departments have mines and this makes Colombia the second most mined country in the world. Mining accidents can cause children and adults to lose legs, arms, and, even die. This affects people that do not live in the city and don’t have many hospitals and people to take care of their health. Handicap International is an organization that is helping remove the mines and make it safer. They are working with other organization to help clear the mines and educate people about the dangers. They are also helping people that have been hurt by the mines to get jobs even if they are disabled. (“Colombia”)
Jeison Aristizabal has created an organization, ASODISVALLE, for disabled people. His program is called Wheels to Go, helps get wheelchairs for people who need them. He has given more than 900 wheelchairs. He is making a big difference to so many people that need help in Cali. He says, “Around the world, when families have a kid with a disability, they think that child won’t be capable of much. We have to change that idea completely. We have to tell these families that their child may have a disability, but that doesn’t mean that person doesn’t have talents that will enable them to succeed in life.” (CNN Heroes)
Disabled people should have a chance to make a difference in the world. Many people think that disabled people have no rights and their life has less value than people without disabilities. Well, I’m here to tell that’s wrong, people with disabilities have the same value of life as people with no disabilities. They also have dreams, ideas and want to be part of our world. People with disabilities have very good role models to look up to like Jeison Aristizabal and Handicap International.
