Marijuana was used for a long time in medicine, religion, and entertainment regions. Long term use may cause insomnia, irritability, hallucinations, and a decline in understanding and memory. Because of the negative effects of marijuana, many countries have banned the use of it, including the United States. However, in the United States, there are four states, including Washington, D.C., have approved the recreational use of marijuana (Sinha). The state of Colorado passed the Colorado amendment in 2012 to approve the cultivation of marijuana, although it was a violation of federal law. In recent years, the legalization of marijuana has been a hot topic for discussion because of the its effects and interests. Recently, the Texas house of Representatives Criminal Law Committee approved a marijuana legalization act, which caused many Texan’s discussion on the Legalization of marijuana. Some people believe that the legalization of marijuana is necessary, because marijuana can benefit us from the medical and economic aspects. Some people think that marijuana itself is a kind of drug, and if inadvertently, it will be difficult to control. In my opinion, the legalization of marijuana can indeed bring people a lot of convenience, but its disadvantages are still more than its advantages. Marijuana legalization could benefit the United States and Americans from economic, health care and social security aspects. The sales of marijuana in Colorado and Washington over the past year were better than expected, leading to an increase in tax revenue. In 2015, Colorado collected more than $135 million in medical and recreational marijuana taxes. The state has more than $996 million in sales. These will not only create employment opportunities, but also bring economic vitality to the pot industry in these areas. If infrastructure such as California and Nevada has already existed, the economic impact will be more quantifiable with the maturity of the industry (Krishna). For medical care aspect, medicinal marijuana can help with cancer, epilepsy, glaucoma, anorexia. In many states, it is legal to use marijuana under certain conditions, which makes more people free to use the drug. As a kind of medicine, marijuana is cheap and effective. If marijuana is legalized, people can spend less money to get health, and the state can save more money for transportation, education, and so on (Sinha). When a drug is legalized, the substance is lower in value for the illicit trade, resulting in a reduction in drug related violence. Furthermore, if the government legitimize and control the supply of a material, the social security will be increased at the same time (Sinha). On the opposite, there are some disadvantages of legalize marijuana. Marijuana is a drug that is addictive. One tenth of the marijuana users gradually become dependent as time goes by. In 2008, 7 million of cannabis users over 12 years of age accounted for 4 million 200 thousand of people who were dependent on or abused illicit drugs. This means that about 2/3 of Americans who are suffering any material abuse have marijuana dependence. If the United States legalized marijuana, the growth of the user would be large and rapid, while the number of addicts would also be multiplied (“Why We Should…”). Marijuana is able to cue some kinds of illnesses, but at the same time, it may cause some other kinds of illnesses. People opposed to legal marijuana have pointed out that marijuana smokers are suffering from memory loss, and the possibility of schizophrenia and depression is increased. Marijuana smoker inhaled smog in deeper lungs and kept smoke there longer than smoking. The deeper, longer – lasting carcinogens may increase the possibility of lung cancer (Franciosi). In conclusion, although marijuana has a lots of advantages in economic, health care and social security aspects, its essence is a addictive drug. Once it is overflowing, countless people are addict to drug dependence, and it’s hard to control. In order to avoid this, I do not recommend that Texas government legalize the use of marijuana, even if it is only used in entertainment and medical care.
