Forged neglect in Ohio, a rate of 10.4 per

Forged By Fire by Sharon Draper shares many ways in which children are being abused. Such as child abuse, domestic abuse, and child abandonment. The two main characters of the book, Gerald and Angel, were both abused by their parents. In the beginning of the novel, Gerald’s mom Monique, had abused him by teaching him “lessons”. Monique had abandoned Gerald in his home when he was three years old. Child abuse is very common and happens everyday. I have chosen to learn and research more about child abuse in the U.S to see if it is similar to Forged by Fire. In the state of Ohio, there has been many cases in which children have been abused in numerous ways. According to a study in 2013 by CWLA, “In 2013, 27,562 children were victims of abuse or neglect in Ohio, a rate of 10.4 per 1,000 children, representing a 6.1% decrease from 2012. Of these children, 48.3% were neglected, 43.2% were physically abused.” (CWLA 1). This comes to show that the amount of children being abused is increasing drastically every year. Child endangerment is when someone puts a child in danger that could lead to death, physical, and mental damage. Some signs of child neglect are being afraid to go home or low self esteem. In Forged by Fire, the main character Angel, is neglected and abused. For example, according to the text, “She had on a long-sleeved dress that was too big for her and, even though it was hot, long black tights.” (Draper 19). Angel wasn’t allowed to take off her stockings because the stockings and large dress are covering bruises. ¬†Another example of abuse is how another main character Jordan, punches and kicks Monique. According to the text, “Jordan could take no more. He raised his arm above his head and slapped Monique with the back of his hand so hard that she fell onto the bed. Pain and confusion filled her face as she reached up to feel her bruised and bleeding lip.” Then Monique realized that she didn’t like the fact that she was being abused. So she had to put an end to it. Forged by Fire is very realistic when it comes to child abuse. When the children do get abused, the ways they are abused is very accurate to the ways children are abused today. In the state of Ohio, more than 78,000 children are being abused every year. Child abuse is very common today. If you ever see someone being abused in any way, make sure to report it immediately because you could save a child from the abuse. In Forged by Fire, to solve problems in which Gerald and Angel are abused, Gerald talk to his friend’s father Mr. Washington, about the situation. Then Mr. Washington and Gerald went to the police station and reported Jordan. They went to court and Jordan was sent to jail for 6 to 10 years. In conclusion, child abuse is a huge issue in the world. Thousands of kids are abused everyday. The novel Forged by Fire by Sharon Draper, relates to the real world and how people are abused of all ages. Make sure if you ever see someone being abused, you report it to (1-800) 422-4453. Child abuse can result in child endangerment and child abandonment.
