 Data VisualizationAssignment # 4DECEMBER 24, 2017ABDUL HADIFA14-BSE-052 Creating VisualizationsThe first step in creating a visualization is to put measures and dimensions on different shelves . Shelves are names of the areas on the top and left of the view. The way to create graphs is by putting the fields onto these shelves, When we put the fields in the shelves the tableau software automatically starts to create possible graphs from the data and display it on the screen. Page shelf: The pages shelf creates a set of pages with a different view/graph on each of the pages. You can easily go through these pages graphs and compare them when needed.Filter shelf:The filter shelf allows us to filter the data we put into the rows and columns shelf. This is one of the most helpful features of tableau it lets us easily show the important and related data and separate it allowing us to show only the data related to what we are trying to show.Rows and Columns shelf:The rows and columns shelf allows us to put the data from the tables into these shelves. When we put the data in row shelf then this data will show on the x-axis while when we put the data in the column shelf the data will show on the y-axis. Most of the graphs need data on both the shelves to work but there are a few graphs where we can put data in only one shelf and show it.Marks Shelf:Marks shelves allow us to further manipulate the data. This shelf has many features in it including allowing us to change color and the shapes for data to be represented. When we want to highlight the data this is the most helpful shelf allowing easy manipulation of data.PillsPills are actually the fields we drag from our tables. There are two types of pills blue and green. The blue pills are often dimensions and are discrete while the green pills are continuous.Filters    Normal Filter is used to constraint the data from DB(Data Base) depending on selected measures or dimensions.    Quick filter is for viewing the filtering choices and filter each worksheet on a dashboard and at the same time allowing changing of  the values within the defined range during the run time.    Context Filter is used to filter the data that is for each individual sheet. When a worksheet queries the data base  it creates a temporary table that it uses to compute the chart. Steps:1.    Load the data source into tableau.2.    All the table columns will become visible in the pane on left side.3.    Drop the respective measures and dimensions in the rows and columns shelves.4.    Tableau will show the possible options of graph on the right side of screen from which you can select the type of graph you want to use.5.    Now you can apply filters on the data to make it suitable to your question.6.    We can also change color and shapes etc using the marks shelf.7.    Further on we can create stories by linking multiple graphs together and can also create dashboards of one project.8.    Finally when done save the file or convert it into PNG,JPEG or PDF as desired.GRAPHSTypesTREE MAPS Treemap provides a herarchical view of the data.It allows us to separate data in the form of boxes where each box contains only one type of data.The size of boxes/rectangles changes which is a visual aid to see the difference between all these boxes. As the size of box increases it means it has more significance to the question we are posing allowing us to see which data is more closely related to what we are questioning.Scatter Plot Scatter plot are mostly used when there is too much data to be visible through bar charts and other visually pleasing charts. Scatter plots are mainly used to represent huge ammounts of data . In scatter plot different colors are used to represent similar data with similar color and we can further categorize the data by using different shapes for each type of data.Stacked Bar Stcaked bar is used when we have to represent same sort of data and differentiate it in the form of parts. In stacked bar we create a single bar representing the data then by separating the bar into smaller parts we show the divisions among the data. In stacked bar eac bar shows us the whole and the segments represent the categories of that whole.As we can see we use different colors to categorize the data.Line Chart Line charts are the most commong types of charts, They are used to show a trend in the data. In line charts the series of points are shown on the graph and they are connected with eachother to show a line which shows a trend that is gradual increase or decrease (Graph line making cruves moving up and down).Dual Combination Dual Combination is used when we are working with mulitple measures. As we can see in the above graph there are two y-axis. So inorder to show the trend in the data which is under question we use dual combinaiton here the line represent one trend and the bars represent the other trend. Now comes the main point which is that the places where these two graphs intersect with eachother is what dual combination is all about , So by using dual combination we we were able to compare two trends.Bar Graph Bar Graphs are the most common and most used form of charts. They are most used because one we have been representing data through bars for a very long time and two they are easy to understand by anyone. In bar graph the datas max points are shown. Bar graphs are best suited for showing maximum of 10 bars at a time.Maps Maps are very rarely used because they have alot of visual clutter. Maps are mainly used when the data is related to geographical locations and when the data needs visual aid of maps to show the data distribution. The most common places where these maps are used are for showing weather or age distribution and similar sort of data.STORY BOARDING In tableau a story is a collection of visualizations which are linked together and they convery a message. They help narrate data easily when we show visualizations one by one in a particualr order they allow a relationship to develope between the data. Astory is also a sheet so the methods you use to create,name and manage worksheets and dashboards also apply to stories.So basically stories are a collection of sheets joined toether to convey a message.DASHBOARD .A dashboard is a collection of many worksheets and supporting data shown in a single place so we can use the different visualization to compare alot of data simultaniously.So in short rather than going through each worksheet separately it allows us to have them open in the same tab and compare them with ease.BERTIN AND PERCEPTUAL CODINGBertin variables and perceptual coding have a lot of influence in data visualization. By uusing these variables we can classify which data is important and make it more visible by using these variables. For example the most prominent way of making data more clearer and visible is by using position variable , It pin points the location and helps make visualization more clearer. Similarly for peceptual coding we can use colors and positions and textures etc to make data more prominent. CONCEPTS AND FUNCTIONALITIESConceptsData Types:All the fields in the data base have data type .The data types tells us the kind         of data present in the field.We can change the data type for a field as follows1.    Click the data  type icon for the field2.    Choose a new data type from the drop-down list Field Types:Whenever we connect to a new database the tableau software assigns each field in the data base to either dimensions area or the measures area. The assigning depends on the type of data present in the field. If data is of category form like names ,dates etc then tableau assings it to dimensions area while if field contains numbers tabluea assings it to measures. discrete dimensions         continuous dimensions     discrete measures      continuous measures      Order of Operations:The order of execution in tableau can be depicted with the help of following diagram Functionalities1.    We can roll back in history to get previous iteration. 2.    Tableau allows us to check all the possible graphs we can implement with the given data allowing us to choose the best of them 3.    Tableau allows us to create stories aswell helping us better communicate the data. 4.    Tableau allows us to license the views. 5.    Tableau allows has a function where it allows us to subscribe to others allowing us to stay notfied of what others are upto
