Ava DuVernay’s “13th” is a documentary that illustrates mass incarceration of the African American race in America, and forcing them to be enslaved. The name given to the documentary was inspired by the Thirteenth Amendment which states “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime… shall exist within the United States…” (The Library of Congress, 2017).It is explicit that Ava DuVernay argues that the government and/or political system in America is essentially directly against African Americans. Ava DuVernay’s thoughts that are expressed in this documentary will only make all of the negatives that she brought up cause conflict in the media and lives depicted throughout. Ava DuVernay’s “13th” only creates more disturbance throughout society with bringing up old claims. Ava DuVernay brings up the idea that since African Americans have such a high prison rate of roughly 2,314,560 people as of 2014 from the documentary, this means automatically that the most of the system of law is flawed in her eyes. This way of thinking could become problematic if the people who were influenced by the idea of African Americans being treated unfairly, people who feel victimized might make an attempt to act on these ideas when there’s no true reason to do so. Therefore, the documentary’s purpose is made as an attempt to expose the way the political system operates while the prison system is used to “enslave” African Americans. This was all apparently made so if an African American went to jail for a petty crime they will be unable to acquire jobs due to prejudice of their past jail time. Ava DuVernay begins citing different sources of African American forms of art like television and music.  Ava DuVernay paints the idea that since Luke Cage is an African American superhero that it’s a opening for African Americans to speak on it, showing African Americans in a positive light like it’s a negative image. This conveys that Ava not only is unaware of the fact he is known to be African American, yet also shines light that Ava is under the same influence she addressed that apparently “identifies” African Americans as known to be criminals.   Ava DuVernay is unaware of everything she says which is suppose to “fortify” African Americans. Ava DuVernay is unreliable at staying straightforward throughout and incorporates ideas from the past which will only drive the masses into irrational decisions. Ava DuVernay has many ideas which contribute to modern day society’s problems. Some of these ideas interfere with economical issues throughout which are already being addressed which makes the points she has directed obsolete. Ava DuVernay expected to bring about enormous change with her documentary, which ended up doing little to nothing whatsoever but causing meaningless controversy.
