Anna Lehman Hello! I’m here to talk to you about Swami Vivekananda. Swami was born into a upper-middle class of the caste system. Swami was a devout Hindu. He was born on January 12th,  1863 in Calcutta, and he died in 1902 in India. He was known to be an Indian philosopher and reformer, mostly social work. His religious journey began when he joined the Calcutta Metropolitan School, a Christian college. Going there helped him interpret Hinduism in depth, as well as understand another religion. His given name was actually Narendranath Datta. His father was Vishwanath Dutta, and his mother was Bhuvaneshuari Devi. Swami, in India, is a title meaning master. He acquired this after he followed Ramakrishna. His philosophy was Vendanta, meaning your soul is divine, straight from gods, there is a oneness of religion, and the tolerance of religion. His social work was mostly for women equality, less of young marriage, less discrimination, and no caste system. He helped the poor and sick, and strongly promoted education.  Some changes and inspiration to the world would be as follows: he founded the Ramakrishna Misson, went to America to get funding for the poor, and represented Hinduism at World Parliment of Religions in Chicago. He was a monk in India. He taught faith, character building, and the importance of education. Vivekananda was inspired by the Vedas, a Hindu text informing people of old knowledge. As a monk, he meditated in Kanyakumari and led the pilgrimage to North India. He also introduced Yoga to western countries, being peaceful and concentrating on life. He said religion was inside yourself; despite all the others saying it was just theory. He was inspired by Brahms Samar, Ramakrishna, and the Vendas, the holy texts. His lasting change was a new understanding of Hinduism, a new view of mankind, and how to be moral. He taught life was meaningful and should be lived well. He focused on Bhakti, Jnana, Karma, and Raja types of yoga. We learned that gender and caste doesn’t matter to be a good, religious person. He created the Ramakrishna Math, Ramakrishna Mission, and the Vendanta Society of New York. They are still ago, inspiring people on a daily basis. The Ramakrishna Math in for male monks to pray. The Ramakrishna Mission was for Hindus. He believed that science and religion are the same, because it is the science of consciousness. The Vendanta Society is accepting and believes in life being meaningful. His philosophy was Advaita Vedanta. To this day, people see him as a hero, an inspiration to all people, and kind.He believed you should teach yourself your way of life. He was tolerant, and lived by three phrases. 1. People who help you, don’t forget them2. If people are loving, don’t hate.3. If people are believing, don’t cheat. He wrote many books, and some of which are as follows:1. Karma Yoga2. Raja Yoga3. Vedanta Philosophy: Lectures on Jnana Yoga4. Lectures from Colombato to Almora Thank you for listening, and I hope you learned something about the incredible Hindu leader, Swami Vivekananda.
